Journey to Center of Earth - VFX Artists Go Unpaid

Topics: 1   Posts: 14
From the IMDB, as of 8 Aug:

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Budget: $45M (estimated)
Opening Wknd:  $21M (USA)
Gross: $96.5M (Worldwide)

Surely there must be some way for some of this profit to go to those who helped EARN it: the vfx artists? Did people go to see this movie because of the vfx? YES, absolutely. Every bit as much as because of Mr Fraser, or the director ar any of the above-the-liners.

If an actor worked on a picture, and his/her agent went bust halfway through, would it be OK then not to pay the actor for his/her appearance?

I suppose that "morally right" and "legally binding" aren't necessarily congruent.

What if we all put $1 a month into a kitty to retain a lawyer to watch our backs for this kind of stuff.

I guess that's how unions start...

What you describe would be great, if someone were willing to take the responsibility. And it would be a huge responsibility. Which lawyer? Operating in which countries and under which laws? What happens if you take on a case that other people dispute the merits of?

If you are going to cover your arse in all the ways you would need to - before you know it, you are a union.

Does the VES do anything at all, in this area?

typical for a non-union shop, the solution: unionize cg, as does disney, ilm and a few others...with unions there is recourse

I don't think the VES does. Maybe the animation union?

Well, I was there at Meteor but left WAY before all that nonsense went down.

Interestingly it was in Canada and for those Americans who were still on the crew (I think by that time there was almost none) it must have been even harder to get any recourse.

So I suppose a union of some sorts would be the entity to address such a situation.

I attended the VES general membership meeting and the subject of a union was brought up but is still just a thought.  Perhaps in time.

Unfortunatly i was still there when they closed, i worked there for over 5 years.

It was really hard for my familly and i lost alot $. But fortunatly we had savings, so

i had a bit of time to find a job. It didn`t took long to find something cause i worked

in Montreal in the past 10 years and had alots of friends a bit everywhere.

There was the writers strike and there was not many houses hiring at that time, so

i guess i was lucky to have something. Started working in mid December  for this

new place, but very soon problem being paid came up, late, 1/2 the paie, bounce

paie.  Everytime there was a new excuses, but still money was coming, late but

coming.  I did look around in Montreal but there still wasn`t alot of opportunaty in

the film industry. So i let you guess what happen.  Yea you guess right, it did close.

At least this time i didn`t loose banked hours, the last month of paie and my %

hollyday. This was the 19 September and on the 1 of October my girlfriend gave

birth to a nice little babygirl.

So in the last years i lost in two Bankrupcy, took part of

my savings and lost also alot (like everybody) in whats left of thoses savings do to

the economy.

I am trying to find a new job but there not alot for now over here, again cause of

the economy most client deley there signature on the contracts.

No contracts, no jobs for artists. Yes there is still somes options, going outside, the

game industry is really good here and offers alot but still not hiring that much for

now.

I am doing my prayers now, cause my wallet is getting thinner and i have 2 kids to

take care of. And i dont know whats going to happen in the next month, hopefully i

wont loose all i have left.

Thruthfully, the worst part of that is that i dont feel responsable at all. I did nothing

wrong but work and give my best expertise possible, i did make what was asked of

me faster than what was the deadline in 90% of the time. I did do overtime even if

what i had to work on was finish and approved. I did my best.

So if you ask me, yes i would like to be protected againts this.

Thanks for reading me, and best of luck to all.

Sorry to hear that Marc. This type of abuse should not happen. Maybe we should make a list of people and companies to avoid? A "better business bureau" forum maybe?

Wishing you the best of luck in the future.

Well Marcus, maybe some sort of clearinghouse of bad experiences/companies is a good idea but it could erupt into a "flame-war" forum and could subject people to accusations of slander and other legal liability.

Its a tough call because everyone has at least one horror story about not being paid/paid late/ brushes with bad seeds etc.   Its like you want to let as many people know about it to prevent those companies and people from doing it again but you have to weigh it against the possibility you'd be tagged as a rabblerouser or flamed as a fabricator of lies.

Perhaps a bit of anonymity is called for?  And only after verification of at least two more incidences that it could be posted?

Just my 2 cents...for whatever thats really worth.

I had alot of fun working at Meteor, it was really nice, poeples were great and

in the 5 years i worked there i learned alot, they gave me the opportunity to work

on movies, and nice ones.  Learn new programmes and etc....

The only thing that is bad from Meteor is the way they closed down.

Hey, i can understand being layedoff but paie me for the work i done.

If it would still be open i would be working there cause i like it.

Just being protected for being paid would be good.
