On IRobot I was responsible for the 2D Look Development at Digital Domain, and was also a Lead Compositor on this sequence.
Part of the look development process led me to creating a Nuke gizmo called "MakeBot" that combined the 3D EXR render layers into a single beauty pass. This was done so all the Compositors combined the passes in the same manner, allowing for consistency across dozens of artists. The amount of control and flexibility this provdied, was immense. You can see a screen grab of the UI below. But beyond the basic combination of standard render layers, the Refraction and Transblurency was also achieved via Makebot. Back in 2003, rendering sub-surface scattering was not an option even for a couple shots, no less several hundred.
In addition to adding the Robot, Alan Tudyk who played "Sonny" the Robot had to be removed from every shot, as he was larger than the Robot. This was done by reprojecting a clean plate onto set geometry, all in nuke. It was the first time EXR's were used at DD, and 3D projections were also added to Nuke for this very film.
The composites in these clips were done by:
Eric Beaver Dennis Davis Yann Doray Joe Farrell Dag Ivarsoy Paul Lambert Kevin Lingenfelser Michael Maloney Michael Melchiorre Jason Selfe Deborah Wiltman
*The full Digital Domain credits run at the end of the clip.
People often hear me refer to rienzo as "the king". Sure there is a King of Burgers, but this guy is a King of Images. Imagine a meat grinder of random elements. Now imagine the output of that meat grinder being the leanest ground beef of all time. That is the kind of badassmofo work that rienzo does. Not hiring him is like repeatedly slamming your head in a door.
